Sado Island

What's there?

There is a sound of the waves, a smell of the wind, and silence.

Sado Island has a different terrain than the mainland of Japan, and the scenery and colors you see are a bit different. It also has a history and culture unique to the island.

Find places that interest you to plan your day on the island.

You can just sit in your own chair at your favorite place and feel the time passing slowly.

Access to Sado Island

To get to Sado Island, you can take a jetfoil or ferry from Niigata City.

From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Niigata Station, which takes about 2 hours. From there, take a bus to the ferry terminal, which takes about 15 minutes.

While the Jetfoil ride takes only a little over an hour to get to the island, it takes about two and a half hours on the ferry. However, it is fun to take a leisurely ride on the ferry, and you will lose track of time as you feel the salty breeze and take in the scenery. You may be welcomed by dolphins along the way.

It costs less than half the price of the Jetfoil, so you can save on the fare.

Transportation in Sado Island

You can take a bus to get around the island, but the number of buses is limited. So, detailed planning is necessary, such as deciding how long you will stay at your destination depending on the departure time of the bus.

If you want to tour the island at your own pace, we recommend renting a car. You can rent a car for about 6,000 yen per day, so if you are traveling with friends, car rental is by far the most economical option.

During the high season of travel, there may not be enough vehicles available, so make reservations in advance.
